Postgraduate Diploma / Postgraduate Certificate in Statistics
The School of Computer Science and Statistics at Trinity College, Dublin offers, in each academic year, a part time course in Statistics aimed at graduates of other disciplines. This course is best seen as ‘continuing professional development’ for people who need statistics for their work. The course provides a broad introduction to the statistical ideas and methods relevant to data gathering and analysis in a wide variety of research areas as well as business and administration. The intention is to provide participants with a practical grasp of statistics based on a sound knowledge of the underlying ideas and concepts. Graduates of the course should be well placed to apply the ideas and methods to which they have been introduced in their own work. To this end, all the material is presented in the context of practical examples from a wide range of applications.
Up to this the course has lead to the award of a Postgraduate Diploma, however to take account of the credit volumes for postgraduate courses required by the national framework for qualifications guidelines, it has been decided to change the title to Postgraduate Certificate for intakes from 2013 onwards. In order to maintain the Diploma title the work involved for students would need to have practically doubled and this was considered undesirable.
The content of the course will remain as it has been in recent years - only the title will change.
