Gaye Stephens
Assistant Professor, Computer Science

Biography

Currently, I lecture on undergraduate, MSc and PhD level programmes. I supervise students on the MSc in Health Informatics, the MSc in Global Health and the SPHERE PhD program in Trinity College Dublin. I also supervise computer science students in internship positions and students doing client based final year project I contribute to the Irish Health Informatics community as an active member in a number of organisations, namely, Arthritis Ireland, e-Health Ireland ECOSYSTEM working group, Irish Platform for Patient Organisations, Science and Industry, Council of Clinical Information Officers, OOCIO Design Authority/NSAI advisory group and the Health Informatics Society of Ireland (HISI). My current Research interests concern analysis and design of informed consent models and instruments for sharing information contained in Electronic Health Records (EHR). Ownership of the EHR, digital health literacy and patient engagement are all essential ingredients in designing appropriate and useful models and instruments that can be supported by and influence EHR system information architectures. Novel research dissemination and engagement processes are important as scalable EHR research is both interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and needs to consider legacy systems as well as nascent technologies embedded in the complex world of healthcare. My strategy of working is a patient centered one as it is the patient who is in the unique position to view integration of infromation across the health services. To that end I am working to develop a framework for patient engagement in the development of an Irish Electronic Health Record.

Research Expertise

Description

(KDEG) Knowledge and Data Engineering Group: The group focuses on research issues and applications in Knowledge and Data Management. In particular the group is actively researching Adaptive (hypermedia) systems, intelligent management for communications and ubiquitous computing, semantic web and interoperability, web orchestration and business process automation. In particular, KDEG has pioneered research in four focused application areas, namely · Telecommunications Services Management · Smart Space (Ubiquitous Computing) Management · Adaptive Hypermedia and eLearning · Health Informatics My current Research interests concern analysis and design of informed consent models and instruments for sharing information contained in Electronic Health Records (EHR).
