Technology Mediated Group Learning in Informal and Formal Settings

Bridge21

Bridge21 is the flagship umbrella project of the Centre. Bridge21 is both a model of “21st century learning” which embodies the use of teamwork and technology and an educational action research project aimed at helping transform Irish Second Level Education.

Since 2007 over 8,000 students (primary & secondary) have attended workshops in our purpose designed space on campus. Bridge21 received  the Irish Learning Technology Association award for Innovation in Learning (2009), was included in the (2013)  inaugural Nominet Trust top 100 of the world’s most inspiring social innovations using digital technology - http://www.socialtech.org.uk/ and under the banner of Trinity Access 21 was shortlisted for the 2013 World Innovation Summit for Education award.

Originally conceived as an outreach project since 2011 Bridge21 has been working with schools around the country to bring the Bridge21 model of teaching & learning into mainstream classrooms. The goal is to help bring about systemic change in the Irish education system – not just for disadvantaged schools but across the whole system.

In 2014 Trinity Access 21 (which is a collaboration between the Trinity Access Programmes, Bridge21, the School of Education and the School of CS & Statistics) took this agenda a giant step forward with a suite of offerings supported by a benefaction from Google.   The offerings include a Level 9 Certificate in 21st Century STEM education run out of the School of Education, a School Culture Transformation Programme (College for Every Student) which aligns to the TAP agenda and a suite of non accredited CPD workshops for  teachers in Computer Programming.  

Particular areas of research for Bridge21 are: Bridge21 and the teaching of Mathematics, History, Digital Literacy, 2nd Languages  and Computer Programming; school transformation and teacher CPD (Claire); Bridge21 in a semi-formal setting (John).  (NEED AN ENTRY FOR EACH).

There are two postgraduate courses associated with the Centre.  An M.Sc. in Technology & Learning and a Postgraduate Certificate in 21st Century STEM Education.
