ACM CHI 2008 Workshop on Technology in Mental Health

Mental illness has been identified as one of the greatest challenges facing society in the coming decades. However, there are significant barriers to access for many people suffering from mental illness, including overburdened public health care systems, geographic distance from point of care, difficulties encountered by individuals in engaging with services, and the stigma associated with mental illness. This workshop will explore the potential of technology to improve access, engagement, effectiveness and affordability of treatment in the area of mental health.

This workshop will identify and explore opportunities for further research and development; particularly, participants will examine

• Challenges faced by mental health professionals and possible technological support.
• Promising and emerging technologies and research questions associated with these.
• HCI research challenges and modes of collaboration between technology and mental health professionals.

The Workshop will be held as part of the ACM CHI 2008 Conference on Human Factors in Computing - the premier Human-Computer-Interaction conference.

Specific topics can include: design for user engagment, designs to reduce stigma, addressing age and socio-cultural factors, presence and mental health, computer mediated communication, mobile and pervasive applications, personalized and adaptive systems, and experiences in design to address specific conditions.

The workshop will bring together researchers from both a HCI background and a mental health background, allowing them to share experiences on applications and processes, and to provide feedback and direction on future developments in this important and socially relevant area.
