SCSS Treasures
The John Gabriel Byrne Computer Science Collection is recorded in the Schedules to the Statutes as being among the treasures of Trinity College Dublin. This invaluable academic collection of early computing items was begun by Professor John Gabriel Byrne in the 1950s, encompassing approximately 3000 items of hardware, literature, miscellany, sliderules and software. It is being carefully curated and indexed in an online catalog (a long-term work in progress) by Dr.Brian Coghlan and Dr.Dan McCarthy of the School of Computer Science and Statistics, Trinity College Dublin. Percy Ludgate
Percy Edwin Ludgate (b.2-Aug-1883, d.16-Oct-1922) was a Dublin corn merchant clerk who designed the 2nd analytical engine (general purpose Turing-complete computer) in history. The John Gabriel Byrne Computer Science Collection holds an original offprint of his 1909 paper "On a Proposed Analytical Machine" (as well as an original offprint of Lady Ada Lovelace's 1843 paper on the 1st Analytical Engine designed by Charles Babbage), and originals of the 1909 Nature review of his paper and his 1914 paper at the Napier Tercentenary Exhibition, plus other Ludgate-related papers. Given the small amount of prior detail on his life and machine, a small team of experts have been researching these details on behalf of the Collection for some years. See:

Realtime processing of I-LOFAR TBB data
The intention is to continuously (24 x 7 x 365) acquire and process sampled realtime data from the LOFAR radiotelescope installed in Birr Castle, Ireland, in 2017. The data will be acquired from the Transient Buffer Boards (TBB), transferred at high-speed and continuously processed. The processing was initially performed on CAG's high-performance networking, computing and storage infrastructure by Dr.Brian Coghlan and Dr.John Walsh of the School of Computer Science and Statistics, Trinity College Dublin (SCSS, TCD), but is now being performed on a hardware backend at Birr. This work is a joint collaboration between Dr.Coghlan and Dr.Walsh of SCSS, TCD, with Pearse Murphy of the Dublin Institute of Advanced Studies (DIAS), and Prof.Peter Gallagher of DIAS, leader of the I-LOFAR consortium. Home Automation encompassing solar energy and environmental control
Solar Photovoltaic (PV) technology provides free electricity. In a simple installation this electricity will partly or fully power the household, and any excess solar PV power will be exported to the Grid. Some Grids pay good economic returns for exported electricity, but most do not or will soon not do so. In that case solar PV only makes economic sense with a smart installation that maximises the use of the solar electricity. This may then be the basis for smart home automation that encompasses solar energy and environmental control. See:
