Disciplines in the School of Computer Science and Statistics

The School of Computer Science and Statistics was established in 2005 with the amalgamation of the former Departments of Computer Science and of Statistics - a merger motivated by the potential synergy between the research expertise of the two Departments and, in particular, the realization that research strength in statistical learning techniques and in modelling uncertainty would assist in underpinning developments in a number of key areas of computer science such as machine learning, computer vision, bioinformatics, ubiquitous and autonomic computing, and telecommunications.

Today the School is internationally recognised for the quality of its research and teaching at all levels.  The School’s academic and research staff are working towards solving important scientific problems in their areas of expertise and the School continues to play a significant role in the development of Ireland as a “knowledge economy” through the generation of intellectual property and by training a cohort of postgraduate researchers who will assume future leadership positions in Irish industry.

The School comprise five academic disciplines that together reflect both the breath of its expertise and the focus of its research activity.

cs Undertakes “systems research” at the hardware/software interface and has a particular research focus on telecommunications and networked computer systems.
infs Studies the impact of Information and Communication Technology on society and business with a particular focus on the impact of technology on learning.
ins Has a research focus is on computational issues related to perception, cognition, decision and interaction by, and between, systems and their human users.
sws Has significant strength in programming language and software technologies and the formal foundations that underlie them.
st Provides the School’s research strength in statistical learning techniques and in modelling uncertainty.
