3BA3 Further Information

3BA3 is a course with a split personality.  The first semester (12 weeks - made up of all of Michaelmas term and the first three weeks of Hilary term) is dedicated to Operating Systems.  The second semester (the last 6 weeks of Hilary term and the whole of Trinity term) is concerned with Data Communications.  The academic year 2002-3 saw this course undergoing undergoing a radical transformation... From academic year 2004-5 onwards the second half of the course is being taught by Andronikos Nedos.
  • All lectures notes were provided online in PDF format.  Students must still attend lectures and their job in lectures is to learn as much as possible and to annotate the lecture notes (the notes on their own are insufficient).  After the first week, students should bring physical copies of the overheads to lectures.
  • Lots of online resources are provided.  These were intended to support the learning experience, facilitating students to broaden their knowledge of the areas covered.  They also should provide support for the coursework as students in this course are expected to get to grips with programming under UNIX on their own!
  • Assignments are submitted through an PHP based form.  This allows a rigid format for assignment submission and should make it clear to students what is expected of them.
All of these new facilities are provided online through the 3BA3 web site, but to access to the facilities is password controlled (and the password is only released at the start of the year).
